AMERICAN GODS & OTHER IDOLS
We are created for worship. The entire universe was created to worship.
Worship YAHWEH. YESHUA. GOD. KING OF KINGS. LORD OF LORD.
What is it about the individual (You, me, I) that is so special? What about us do we find so important? In reality we are nothing but dust. Burdened with lives of sin, strife, decay, death.
We are dust.
And yet we live with a heart of eternity. But sin wrought ruin on any forever we may have originally had. Sin brought shame and decay.
So what do we have to worship about ourselves? Nothing. Everything good, decent, kind, creative, or regal about us is a gift from the Lord. Oh, make no mistake, the great (cloyingly beautiful yet terrible) tempter and his cohorts can twist and distort what Yahweh has given us, but he cannot create anything good. After all he's nothing more than a jealous creation himself. One who hates us.
If we worship anything about ourselves, we worship nothing. Without the Lord we have nothing. Are nothing.
I have needed this reminder. As the world spins it axes of "Do whatever you want." "Be you, no matter the cost." "You are the beginning and the end. Whatever you want you can have, at anytime, in any way."
Twisted. Yet I find the words running like a record in my mind.
They don't even believe what they preach. The minute one persons "truth" interferes with another their dogma falls to pieces.
Still, its so easy to buy into the lies, the deception.
The world is a mess, but its a tempting mess.
Neil Gamin. A brilliant writer. But I weep over the use the enemy is getting out of what God gave him.
American gods are the very things we create. How much homage do we pay our tiny glowing idols? How many sacrifices do we make in their name(s)? Money? Time? People we forget for their sake?
Its so easy to buy into the falsehood. The worship of our devices.
How often I am guilty of this very thing. How much (to my frustration) do I let this dictate my choices, my wishes, my path. Some of the time I don't even realize how much things like devices and TV mess with the very direction of my thoughts.
Thankfully, their is grace. Wonderful, powerful, cross provided grace. Jesus died, so that we could live in eternity with him, be with him. While we may be fickle; tempted to wander after false gods and shimmering idols he comes after us, fights for us, saves us.
So when you find yourselves worshiping idols, wether they are images, objects or ourselves, remember we have a God who has called us to better. Who has died so we could leave the lies and deception in the grave, and return to eternity. An eternity that was once gone, but now restored.
The Lord loves you, and he wants far better things than for us to worship things. So walk away, and do not loose hope, though you may stumble and falter. Yahweh will provide you help. He will transform your life, if you have the willingness to let him.
Jesus loves us, chases after us. How often I need to hear that. When we are at our worst, our most vile, destructive, sinful he died because he loved us. Paid the price so that we would not be separated from him. Oh heart, you may bleed, but our savior died and was raised.
So we can worship him on eternities shores. Where death has no string, and idols are no more.
